Professor of Sociology Sigmund Grønmo is now proposed as a rectoral candidate and it means that this spring’s election campaign at the University of Bergen has been launched.
Together with Grønmo Professor Anne Gro Vea Salvanes of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences is introduced as a candidate for the Deputy Rector’s position. Professor Berit Rokne Hanestad of the Faculty of Medicine is proposed as Vice Rector for education. In addition, Professor Kjersti Fløttum of the Faculty of Arts is a candidate for a newly established position as Vice Rector for international relations, according to a press release.
The quartet presents a programme of university policy entitled “Renewal of the university’s activity – development of the university’s distinctive character”. In the programme the candidates take the initiative, among other things, to have a committee “carry out a critical and thorough assessment of how the quality reform works in various environments and what should be prioritised in the future monitoring of the reform”. Apart from this, the programme states that basic research must be strengthened and great emphasis is put on the university’s international relations.
Among the 23 people on the list of nominators we can find the deans of the Faculties of Social Sciences, Arts and Law, as well as Professor Invild Gilhus and student Jette Christensen, both of whom sit on the university Board of Governors.
Rectoral candidate Sigmund Grønmo has been a professor of sociology at UoB since 1990. Earlier he was professor at the Norwegian School of Management, and he has been guest professor at universities in Canada, USA and Australia. Grønmo was Deputy Rector at UoB from 1997 to 2001, and he has also held the positions of department chair, dean and chaired various councils, boards and committees at UoB.
The deadline for nominating rectoral candidates is 16 March, while the rectoral election itself will be held 14 April. 5 or 6 April there will be an open meeting where the candidates will have the opportunity to introduce themselves. På Høyden will follow the elections closely and will publish interviews with the candidates.
