UB’s unique donation

Publisert

The University Library (UB) at the University of Bergen (UiB) was given a unique donation of research material relating to painter, Mathias Blumenthal (1719-1763). The material is donated by Per Gandrup, from Portugal.

The donation includes original manuscripts, archival items and a unique three-volume image collection. The material was collected by Anna M. Gandrup, who wrote a Masters thesis on the artist in the 1950’s. Following her death, the family wished to preserve the valuable collection, and felt that this could best be handled by an official institution engaging in art history research.

From an art history perspective, Mathias Blumenthat was perhaps the more important Norwegian painter of the 1700’s. he painted landscapes, portraits, allegorical paintings among other things. He is perhaps most well-known for the painting, Blumenthals room which is currently found in the Rasmus Meyers Collection.
